Summary of the changes in design to our "Bunkable" Twin and Bunk Beds.
These changes are due to the 2007 revision of ASTM F1427. Based upon CPSC
guidance, beds manufactured after March 10,2008 must meet the requirements as
prescribed in the Revised Version of F1427.
Reasons for design changes
These standards have been revised to minimize accidents to children resulting
from normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse of bunk beds. To meet
these standards we had to make changes in the design of the beds. There can be
no vertical protrusion along the top surfaces of the upper bunk structure
greater than 3/16".
As a result all finials have been removed from the beds and the top edge of the
top stretchers are flush with the top of the legs. All the beds end assemblies
now have a top cap [various designs] that sit on top of the bed legs and top
stretchers. On some of the beds the location of the lower stretcher on the end
assemblies has been changed and in some instances the lower stretcher is
slightly narrower.
Changes to the Stockbridge, Craftsbury and Forestdale Bunk Beds
The ends [top edge] of the headboard and footboard bends are now 1/8" down from
the top of the bed legs, rather than 7/8".
Due to the new standards we have had to "flatten" the bend of the Craftsbury and
Forestdale beds by ¾" in the center of the bends. The bottom edges of the
stretchers are 11-1/2" from the bottom of the bed legs, rather than 11" .The
legs on the Craftsbury Bed have been redesigned, they now are the same as
Forestdale bed legs.
Changes to the Garden Gate Bunk Bed
To meet the new standards there are no longer any finials on these beds. There
cannot be any vertical protrusions on the end structures [or guardrails] of the
upper bunks more than 3/16" high. There is now a "top cap" on the headboards and
footboards that is positioned on top of the bed legs and protrudes over the
inside and outside faces and the ends of the end structures. The legs have been
redesigned to accommodate these design features.
Changes to the Clapboard and Board & Batten Bunk Bed
The finials have been removed from these beds for the same reason as they were
on the Garden Gate bed. The headboards and footboards have a steam bent "top
cap" that is positioned on top of the beds legs and protrudes over the inside
and outside faces and ends of the end structure. The bottom edges of the lower
stretchers are now 12-3/4" from the bottom of the bed legs.
Changes to the Stonington Bunk Bed
The finials have been removed from this bed for the same reason as they were on
the Garden Gate bed. The bed has been redesigned with a "top cap" on the
headboards and footboards that is positioned on top of the bed legs and
protrudes over the inside and outside faces and the ends of the end structures.
The "beading" on the bed panels now runs vertically, making the design a better
match with the Stonington cases. The bottom of the lower stretcher is now
11-1/2" from the bottom of the bed legs.
Changes to the Huntington Bunk Bed
The bottom edges of the lower stretchers are now 11-1/2" from the bottom of the
bed legs.
New item numbers
Due to all of the changes to these beds we have changed our item numbers for
these new versions. They are the same as the old item numbers with one
exception. The new numbers have the letter "R" in place of the first letter "A"
[or for the Stonington bed "O"] of the item number. For example, a new Forestdale Twin Headboard/Footboard is an
R400-B- [versus A400-B- in the past].
